On Thursday, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik announced the construction of India’s largest hockey stadium in Rourkela. He said that this stadium will have a seating capacity of 20 thousand spectators. Also, the Men’s Hockey World Cup 2023 matches will also be played in this stadium. India had previously hosted the Hockey World Cup in 1982, 2010 and 2018 as well.
The stadium will be built on the campus of Biju Patnaik Technical University on about 15 acres of land. Patnaik said in a video message, ‘Odisha will once again host the 2023 Hockey World Cup. The tournament matches will be played at Bhubaneswar and Rourkela.
Powerhouse of Sundergarh District Hockey Talent
Patnaik said, ‘Sundergarh district is the powerhouse of hockey talent. Many players from this place have played for the country at international level. Players like Dilip Turkey and Sunita Lakra have brought pride to the country. In this district, you will see the popularity of hockey. The respect for hockey in Sundergarh is nowhere else in the entire country.
Hockey Stadium in Rourkela in honor of Sundargarh’s contribution
Patnaik said, “In honor of Sundargarh’s contribution to Indian hockey, we will build a new international stadium in Rourkela, which will have a capacity of 20,000 spectators. It will have all the modern facilities. I hope it will be one of the best hockey stadiums in the world.
Officials of Ministry of Sports and Hockey India visited Rourkela
Recently a high level team of officials from the state government, International Hockey Federation, Ministry of Sports and Hockey India visited Rourkela. He took stock of the infrastructure in Rourkela.

Hockey World Cup to begin on January 13, 2023
The Men’s FIH Hockey World Cup will be held from January 13 to January 29, 2023. This will be the 15th edition of the Hockey World Cup. The World Cup, 2018 (14th edition) was also hosted by India. As of 2018, 16 teams will participate in the tournament. At the same time, apart from Host India, 5 Continental champions will qualify automatically.
