UK police launch urgent appeal to find former soldier Daniel Abed Khalife, suspected of terrorism offences, who escaped from HMP Wandsworth in London

A manhunt is underway in the UK for a former soldier suspected of terrorism offences, who fled from a London prison on September 6.

Daniel Abed Khalife, 21, who was awaiting trial on charges related to terrorism and the Official Secrets Act, is believed to have escaped from Wandsworth Prison shortly before 8 a.m. (local time), according to London police.

British media cited a prison source as saying he had escaped through the kitchens and then clung to the bottom of a delivery van.

We are urgently appealing to trace Daniel Khalife, who escaped from Wandsworth Prison this morning.

The British police have advised the public not to approach Khalife, who is 6ft 2ins tall and was wearing a white T-shirt, red and white chequered trousers, and brown steel toe cap boots.

“We have a team of officers who are making extensive and urgent enquiries in order to locate and detain Khalife as quickly as possible,” said Commander Dominic Murphy, head of the London police’s Counter Terrorism Command.

A spike in security measures at airports and ports caused passenger delays on Wednesday as authorities suspected that the terror suspect might attempt to flee the country.

As the manhunt continued into Thursday, there has been no indication of a significant breakthrough in bid to locate Khalife.

Within the government, concerns have arisen regarding the appropriateness of detaining Khalife in a lower-security prison rather than a high-security facility such as HMP Belmarsh in south-east London.
