The first-of-its-kind flying festival, to be held from October 12-15, is being organised jointly by the tourism department, district administration, and The Glide Inn

In an attempt at tourism revival in the state which has been battered by heavy rains and floods in the recent past, the Himachal Pradesh government is going all out to make the Shimla Flying Festival to be held next month a grand success. As part of the preparations, a paragliding ground demonstration was held at the Ridge ahead of the festival, which is aimed at reviving tourism in the “Queen of Hills” and highlighting the adventure tourism potential of the region.

The first-of-its-kind flying festival is being organised jointly by the tourism department, district administration, and The Glide Inn. It will be held between October 12 and October 15.

The demonstration event held on Saturday was attended by officials of the tourism department and members of the hotel association of Shimla who during interaction with media persons said that the flying festival is an attempt primarily aimed at promoting tourism and adventure tourism in the region. It will also be an attempt to showcase the efforts of the local community and authorities in rebuilding and revitalising the tourist city after the recent heavy rains affected tourism adversely.

Meanwhile, round-the-clock work is being undertaken to restore NH-5 in Kinnaur, where almost 380 metres of the road was washed away under a major landslide on Friday.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is undertaking work from both ends so that the road is restored at the earliest.

With road connectivity to the tribal district of Kinnaur snapped, 65-year-old Ganga Devi of village Nichar, who had suffered spinal injuries due to a fall, was airlifted via an IAF Mi 17 for treatment to Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Chandigarh, on Saturday morning.

Restoration work on the road was hampered for some time on Saturday due to shooting stones at the landslide site.

Police and home guard personnel are regulating the traffic movement at both ends and only passenger buses are being allowed close to the landslide site.

It is not just commuters who are facing inconvenience but farmers too are worried as they are encountering problems in transporting their apple and pea produce to the markets.
