A gigantic cloud lighted by numerous lightning bolts illuminated the sky over the weekend, perplexing residents of North Gloucestershire, England. Many videos and photographs were shared on social media, with several people expressing their surprise and curiosity at the strange incident. However, one video in particular has sparked discussion about a mysterious object emerging from the electric cloud, eerily similar to a scene from a science-fiction movie. As soon as the incident was captured, people were fast to share photographs and videos of the event and spread the word about it.
On September 10, bolts of lightning could be seen illuminating the big cumulonimbus cloud in an incredible storm display. The massive black lightning cloud, however, was seen by people in England’s Bristol, Wiltshire, and Herefordshire regions, with some describing it as an “alien invasion.” According to Gloucestershire Live, the lighting cloud was captured at roughly 8:30 pm from Ham Hill in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

A long cloud is observed above housetops in the video, with repeated lightning, before an ‘object’ reportedly shoots out of the cloud from the left side of the clip. The occurrence looked to be what is known as intra-cloud lightning, which occurs when lightning stays entirely within the cloud.
First Aid and Trauma @Bensfirstaid shared a few photographs and a video on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Pretty sure an alien invasion is taking place near Longford, Gloucester,” he captioned his post.

While no thunderstorm warnings were issued in the South West, a yellow weather warning that covered much of northern England was in effect from 2 p.m. until 11:59 p.m., Gloucestershire Live added. The lighting cloud seen by residents in the West Country seemed to be on the north side of Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (previously known as Brecon Beacons National Park), near the border between Herefordshire and Wales, according to storm radar, reports add.
Meanwhile, ITV News West Country meteorologist and weather presenter, Charlie Powell, claimed that the weather phenomena were created by an electrical charge buildup in the cloud.
“During a thunderstorm, the cumulonimbus cloud that forms is full of moving air, huge raindrops, and hail. These all collide and cause an electrical charge to accumulate, so the cloud sort of turns into a massive battery with a collection of positive charge at the top and negative charge at the bottom,” Powell said as per ITV News. “When this imbalance becomes too great, an electrical charge is released as a flash of lightning and a thunderclap,” he explained.
