In August 2023, a monthly growth rate of 23.13 per cent was observed and the passenger numbers reached 148.27 lakh.

In 2023, the Indian domestic aviation sector witnessed an impressive surge in its passenger traffic, during the first eight months. As per the latest data released, from January to August 2023, the domestic airlines have carried 1190.62 lakh passengers. As per the Ministry of Civil Aviation press release, this marks an upward incline on the graph and shows a growth rate of 38.27 per cent when compared to the data of the previous year

In August 2023, a monthly growth rate of 23.13 per cent was observed. The passenger numbers reached 148.27 lakh. This reflects the country’s efforts and the industry’s resilience in trying to recover itself from the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

What was the cancellation rate?

As per the data, despite the impressive growth in passenger traffic, it is important to note that the overall cancellation rate for domestic airlines remained impressively low. In August 2023, it was only 0.65 per cent. In the same month, the scheduled domestic airlines received 288 passenger-related complaints. Thus, the complaint rate per 10,000 passengers was only 0.23 per cent. These low complaints and cancellation rates further prove that the industry aimed at prioritising customer satisfaction and ended up providing them with reliable and efficient services to the passengers.

Union Minister of Civil Aviation and Steel, Jyotiraditya M Scindia, expressed his appreciation for the growth of this sector. He mentioned that such consistent growth and expansion of the industry is a testament to the fact that the combined efforts of airlines, airports and the Ministry of Civil Aviation have offered a secure, efficient and customer-centric aviation ecosystem.

As per the press release, Scindia said, “The aviation industry remains committed to ensuring passenger safety and comfort while adapting to evolving travel demands and regulations. As air travel continues to recover, domestic airlines are poised to play a pivotal role in facilitating economic growth and connectivity across India.”

In the press release, he also appreciated the dedication shown by the aviation industry in ensuring passenger safety and prioritising passenger comfort by adapting to the evolving travel regulations.

As the aviation sector continues its recovery, domestic airlines in India have been playing a contributing role in the economic growth of the country and enhancing smoother connectivity across the states.
