Asian Games organisers reveal that the CGI torch-bearer in the ceremony was modelled after a Chinese schoolboy. The 19th Asian Games started on September 23, 2023.
A widely circulated video capturing a remarkable moment from the 19th Asian Games’ opening ceremony in Hangzhou, China has garnered attention across social media platforms. The event, marked by its vibrant spectacle, showcased a truly mesmerising highlight: a colossal computer-generated torch-bearer, sprinting along the Qiantang River to ignite a ceremonial flame at the Olympic Sport Centre Stadium. This gleaming, golden figure, symbolising the unification of China, Asia, and the world in a new era, as well as the solidarity, affection, and camaraderie among Asian nations, marked the commencement of the games under the theme ‘Tides Surging in Asia.’
Recent reports from the South China Morning Post (SCMP) have revealed that this CGI character has been called Xiao Huomiao, a Mandarin phrase signifying little flame. Intriguingly, it has come to light that the individual within this computer-generated suit was none other than a middle school student hailing from Guangzhou, Guangdong province.
Watch it here:
The student, Gao Yu, who attends Guangzhou Yuyan Middle School in the city’s Huangpu district, was chosen following an extensive nationwide search initiated by the event’s organisers. Although the selection process remains secret, it has been estimated that a staggering 100 million applicants were received for the coveted role, as reported by the Chinese news outlet, Guangzhou Daily.
According to Chinese state media, Gao’s selection was predicated on specific criteria, including his tall stature, exemplary posture, sporting background, and robust physical attributes. Throughout the filming process, Gao donned a sleek black CGI suit adorned with green and yellow accents, while simultaneously executing a series of choreographed movements and actions, all while clutching one of the ceremonial torches.
As Xiao Huomiao embarked on his journey through Hangzhou towards the stadium, he was joined by former Chinese Olympic champions, such as weightlifting gold medalist Shi Zhiyong, double badminton gold medalist Gao Ling, and swimming gold medalist Wang Shun, who passed lit torches among themselves on the path leading to the newer participants in the event.
During the opening ceremony, the show’s host reportedly emphasised that Xiao Huomiao symbolised the millions of spectators tuning in from home and within the stadium itself. Notably, the event also featured another similar element, an AI-generated fireworks display as the ceremony reached its conclusion.
This edition of the Asian Games, initially delayed by a year due to China’s now-abandoned zero-Covid policy, ultimately took place with the participation of over 12,000 athletes representing 45 nations and territories, competing in 40 distinct sports. The prestigious sports event was inaugurated on Saturday, 23 September 2023, and will conclude on Sunday, 8 October 2023.
