Designer shares previews of impending X update, Shadowban Alerts. It shows sensitive content will be labeled and restricted from search, recommendations, and other features on X.

X, the micro-blogging platform formerly known as Twitter, is gearing up for a significant software update. It aims to introduce transparency regarding shadowbans. This long-awaited feature, initially pledged by platform’s CEO Elon Musk, is now taking shape. Andrea Conway, a designer at X, recently provided a sneak peek of what the shadowban alert could potentially look like. In a tweet, Conway expressed the intention to “start transparency somewhere” and shared two preview images from her personal account. The first image shared by Conway displayed a notifications tab with a message stating, “We have added a label to your account which may impact its reach. Learn more.”

The second image elaborates on the reasons why a particular post on X might have received such a label and its implications for the user’s account.

Take a look at Conway’s X post here:

According to the photo, the explanation clarified that the user’s account might have received a label due to the presence of sensitive media content, such as graphic, violent, nudity, sexual behavior, hateful symbols, or other sensitive material. X does allow sensitive content but within the confines of its sensitive media policy. Users are encouraged to mark their media as sensitive to ensure compliance.

It further explained that posts might be accompanied by warnings to enable users who prefer to avoid sensitive content to do so. ”We may cover your posts with a warning so people who don’t want to see sensitive content can avoid it. The reach of your account and its content may also be restricted, such as being excluded from the For You and Following timelines, recommended notifications, trends, and search results,” notification read further.

According to reports from TechCrunch, when a shadowban is in effect, X users can continue to post on the platform, but their tweets may not gain the usual level of traction and replies.

In August 2023, Elon Musk had addressed the delay in implementing this feature, attributing it to the complexities of the “trust & safety” software layers, which require extensive analysis to determine the reasons behind account suspensions or shadowbans. He assured users that comprehensive overhauls of the X codebase were underway to simplify this process.

As of now, platform X is yet to fully roll out this alert system, and the previews shared by designer Conway are still subject to potential changes and refinements.
