An atmosphere of panic gripped the residents in and around Hyderabad’s Khairtabad area as a medium-sized crocodile was spotted on a road adjacent to an open drainage channel after heavy monsoon rainfall.

Every monsoon, the incessant downpour across different states of India brings several distressing reports and visuals showing scary incidents and disruptions to life. While waterlogging, property damages, and loss of life emerged as major concerns for people, certain scary visuals showing wild animals, especially crocodiles venturing into residential areas post-monsoons also surfaced online. In a similar incident, an atmosphere of panic was visible in Chintal Basti near Hyderabad’s Khairtabad area after a medium-sized crocodile was spotted on a road adjacent to an open drainage channel.

According to a report in The Times of India, the reptile was spotted on the road at 6:30 pm after water levels in the area rose, following heavy rains. The crocodile was hovering on the road near a Ganesh pandal. However, later when the crocodile tried to get back into the drainage channel, it got stuck in the passage between the metal rods and walls of the channel.

When the locals spotted the crocodile, they immediately called the police and forest officials, who arrived in 30 minutes to retrieve the animal.

“We are currently conducting a rescue operation to ensure the safe retrieval of the crocodile without endangering the public. While it’s challenging to pinpoint the exact cause, it may be related to either stormwater drains or recent flooding. Though we can’t confirm this with certainty,” informed Ramesh Kumar, forest range officer of the Anti-poaching department.

Upon receiving the information, around 20 officials attempted to bend the metal rods where the reptile was stuck, but nothing seemed successful in turning the rod. Then the officials came up with another idea, they tied a knot to capture the crocodile while trying to lay a trap at the same time. After three hours of hard work, at around 10 p.m., the crocodile, after resisting a lot, was safely rescued using ropes and sticks. It has now been taken by the forest staff for further assessment.

Meanwhile, crocodile spotting is not new in India. A few months ago, two videos of crocodiles strolling on roads near residential areas surfaced on social media.

One video was captured from Kota, Rajasthan, near the Commerce College main road in the Talwandi area, in which a crocodile can be seen crossing a road while some vehicles were seen moving on the road. The other video was captured in Gujarat’s Talala after the water level in the Hiran River rose.
