Many popular Indian street foods and snacks are usually subjected to novel experiments. Street food vendors and other chefs frequently use their imaginations to create something unique on the platter. While some of these are absolutely mouthwatering, others do not appear to be appealing to the public. Recently, a twist on the traditional green chutney that is enjoyed with most street foods caught the attention of many online users. While the vendor tried to uplift the original recipe and called it “aag wali chutney”, netizens think it is “toxic.” The video shared on Instagram by user thedelhifoodie depicts how this ‘aag wali chutney’ is made in a local food stall in Jammu.

The vendor is seen in the video laying two large lumps of coal on a plate. His helper arrives at the kiosk moments later with a large drum of green chutney. They pour mustard oil on the coal and light it on fire with a matchstick. The burning coal is then added to the chutney drum, and the lid is closed for a few minutes. They then give it a good stir, and the unique chutney is ready. Plates of prarathas (Indian Breads) are seen on the table, indicating that the vendor serves this chutney with them. In the caption, the food blogger also mentioned that this is also known as Dhuni Chutney. In the caption, the blogger wrote, “Aag wali chutney also known as dhuni chutney…Where – Gulshan Naan, Jammu.”

While this hot chutney may tempt food enthusiasts to try it, online users are clearly against the idea. People have expressed their concern over the condiment being served. Some said it is “cancerous toxic food”, “Cancer chutney.”

Many were angry at the vendor and wrote, “Who the hell directly adds burning coal to food,” “Oh my god, what the hell! What about the coal?” “who wants to consume this toxicity?” “Badiya or Khaoe or phir hospital jao.”

Another commented, “It’s carcinogenic … study at least that much.” carcinogens are substances that increase the risk of a person being affected by cancer. while another one said that consuming the coal chutney is “equal to smoking 100 cigarettes at a time.”

On one hand while many are pointing out that this is unhealthy, a user said, “That is wood charcoal. Must be quite tasty.” Wood Charcoal is often used to give a smoky flavour to make dishes.
