After the first round of games, India are fifth in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 points table, New Zealand sit pretty at the top followed by South Africa, Pakistan and Bangladesh
Rohit Sharma-led Indian team kick-started their ICC ODI World Cup 2023 on a winning note as they beat Australia by six wickets. KL Rahul smashed an unbeaten knock of 97 runs, while Virat Kohli scored 85 runs as the pair helped India pull off a chase of 200 runs. India had lost captain Rohit, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer on ducks, and after the trio departed, the hosts were 2/3 in the second over.
Virat and Rahul joined hands to slowly but steadily bring India back into the game before helping the Men in Blue begin their World Cup campaign with a win. Since 1999, it is the first time that the Australian team began an ODI World Cup with a defeat.
The match between India and Australia saw the first round of fixtures completed, and after all teams played 1 game each, New Zealand are sitting pretty atop the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 points table. India jumped to fifth place with the win, all four teams above them had 2 points each, but the teams were separated by net run rate.

New Zealand’s dominant nine-wicket win over England in the opening fixture of the World Cup on 5 October at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad meant that their NRR jumped to +2.149.
At the opposite spectrum of the table, the defending champions sit rock bottom after their hefty defeat that dented their NRR to -2.149.
South Africa beat Sri Lanka by 102 runs at the newly renovated Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Saturday, and courtesy of the massive win their NRR jumped to +2.040.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka are second bottom having a negative NRR of -2.040. Pakistan had earlier defeated the Netherlands by 81 runs, the victory helped Babar Azam’s men jump to third place in the table having a NRR of +1.620.
ICC CRICKET WORLD CUP 2023 POINTS TABLE
The Dutch side sit in eighth place in the table with a NRR of -1.620. Furthermore, sitting a place above India are Bangladesh who beat Afghanistan by six wickets, however, their NRR is better than that of India because they won the match with 92 balls to spare.
When KL Rahul scored the winning six at Chepauk, India won the game by six wickets but with 52 balls to spare. Therefore, Bangladesh are fourth with NRR of +1.438, while the Men in Blue are fifth with NRR of +0.833.
Australia are sixth, having a NRR of -0.833, while Afghanistan are seventh with a NRR of -1.438 after the first round of games.
