The Madurai Canine Club organised a show at Thamkukam Convention Centre with about 300 dogs of 55 different breeds walking down the runway.
The Madurai Canine Club’s dog exhibition at the Thamkukam Convention Centre organised on Sunday was a grand success. 300 dogs from the southern states wowed the spectators at a dog show held in Tamil Nadu. The club organised the event, which reportedly featured about 55 dog breeds elegantly strolling around the ring with their owners, exhibiting their beauty and talents. The dogs were first groomed before the show and then assisted by their owners to move around the arena. The initiative, as per reports, was aimed at raising awareness about uncommon native breeds.
The dog show featured Indian breeds such as Rajapalayam, Chippiparai, Kanni, Kombai, and Caravan Hound as well as foreign breeds such as Afghan Hound, Fox Terrier, German Shepherd, Dobermann, St Bernard, Rottweiler, Pug, Golden Retriever, Min Pin, Bull Dog, French Bull, and Bull Mastiff that captivated the audience, as per a report by India.com.
Netizens and animal lovers were happy to learn about this dog show. One user said, “Proud to see such an event happening in Bharat.” A person also joked that the first dog in the video resembles Salman Khan’s character from Tere Naam.

When asked about the growing public interest in Indian breeds, Raja Rajan who breeds native dogs along with foreign ones told the Hindu that he believes it’s a really encouraging sign. He added that previously, establishing the pedigree and obtaining a Kennel Club of India (KCI) certificate were only available for foreign breeds, but as the KCI approved Indian breeds, it proved to be beneficial.
Vinayaga Moorthy, a member of the Madurai Canine Club told the portal that this year the unique breed on show for the first time was the Rhodesian Ridgeback. He added that if the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) and world canine organisation gives recognition to native breeds, they would also be able to participate in international dog shows. He mentioned, “the process is a long drawn one, as they inspect 75 dogs of the same breed ranging from 35 day-old pup to 5 years and see the common standard features. With our native species this becomes difficult.”
The judges for this year’s show, Yuji Yatake from Japan and James Stephen Beckett and Carolwyn Beckett from Australia, told the portal that they were stunned to witness the stamina and fitness of these native Indian breeds.
The show attracted spectators and dog lovers from across the state, with many children coming in with their families.
