To appease your ancestors on Sarva Pitru Amavasya in 2023, you can follow these methods:
1) Offerings of Water
Remember your ancestors and make offerings to them with water. You can use black sesame, kusha grass, white flowers, and rice. Offer water to your ancestors using the front part of the Kusha grass. This act is believed to satisfy them. If you don’t have physical offerings, you can also please your ancestors through your words. Meditate on your ancestors and say, “O Pitru Dev! I offer my words to satisfy all of you. May you all find contentment.”
2) Donating Your Ancestors
To appease your ancestors on Pitru Amavasya, perform acts of charity. After your morning rituals and prayers, consider making donations. On this special day, it is customary to give offerings such as white garments, bananas, white blossoms, black sesame seeds, and curd. These offerings should be given to a needy Brahmin.
3) Worshipping Peepal Tree
On Sarva Pitru Amavasya, you can also perform a special ritual to worship the Peepal tree, believed to house the Trinity. After your morning ablutions, pay homage to the Peepal tree by watering its roots. In the evening, light a lamp with mustard oil under the Peepal tree, positioning it towards the south.
4) Preparing Brahmin Food
Following the Shraddha rituals on Sarva Pitru Amavasya, it is customary to host a feast for Brahmins. To please and honour your ancestors, a meal is prepared which typically includes dishes like kheer (rice pudding), puri (fried bread), and pumpkin curry. There is a religious belief that offering this meal to Brahmins satisfies the ancestors. The food prepared for Shraddha often includes ingredients such as black sesame, mustard, barley, peas, and other specific items that are considered significant in these rituals.
5) Panchabali Karma
Panchabali Karma is a ritual performed by ancestors on Amavasya, where a portion of food is offered to creatures like crows, cows, dogs, ants, and others. It is believed that by providing food to these creatures, the ancestors can receive nourishment through them as a part of this ritual.
