The yoga instructor Vijayalakshmi has been giving free yoga training to students who are studying in government schools.

The prevalence of yoga has been increasing for the past few years in India. People are now more aware of the physical and mental benefits of yoga. And, a yoga teacher from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu has claimed that people can get rid of their thyroid by practising Salabhasana yoga every day. It helps in strengthening the spinal cord and reduces unwanted fat in the abdominal area, she added.

Vijayalakshmi hails from Bharati Nagar next to the Ganapati area of Coimbatore. She has been teaching yoga to school and college students for the past 13 years. She has been giving free yoga training to students who are studying in government schools. She has been awarded the Yoga Kalaimamani award for her selfless and excellent teaching of yoga. It is the highest civilian award in the Tamil Nadu.

While talking to Local18, Vijayalakshmi revealed that she preaches about the importance of the Salabhasan yoga pose for people who are suffering from thyroid. She added that this yoga asana helps in fighting constipation which is “an enemy of mankind”. “Salabhasana is a wonderful way to invigorate the stomach and the vital organs like intestines, stomach, gall bladder etc,” said Vijayalakshmi. She also suggested that men and women should practice this yoga daily if they have large bellies.

Salabhasan pose is also called the locust pose. In this, the legs are stretched out straight and lifted while the arms are lifted and stretched back towards the leg. The head is lifted and the gaze is directed straight ahead. It utilises the strength of the upper and middle back to lift the weight of the legs as high as possible. It improves flexibility and exercises the back muscles. It increases the strength and stamina. Let’s take a look at this yoga pose, which Vijayalakshmi showcases during her interaction with Local18.

International Yoga Day is celebrated on June 21 every year. After recognising the universal appeal, the United Nations proclaimed June 21 as the official day for Yoga. On this day, several politicians, celebrities and organisations perform yoga and raise awareness of the same worldwide.
