The airport staff didn’t allow her to transfer any item to co-passenger’s bag

When the woman placed her check-in bag on the automated baggage drop machine, it displayed her bag’s weight as 15.1 kg, 100 grams above the permissible limit per passenger.

Many of us have faced the worry of having heavy luggage when we are about to fly. We don’t want to pay extra if our bags are just a tiny bit heavier, so we plan carefully. Imagine a situation where you are getting ready for a flight. You check and double-check your suitcase to make sure it is not even a little bit over the weight limit set by the airline. However, a small bottle of juice, a small scarf, or a big bag of chips makes it heavier by a hundred grams. You would ideally not worry about the situation in this case, right? However, remember to be extra careful sometimes, especially if you are at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru.

This unlikely occurrence actually happened with this Delhi woman, who works as a graphic designer. She was reportedly going on a domestic flight with her two friends. They were at Terminal 1 of KIA, and she used the automatic bag drop machine. Her bag weighed 15.1 kilograms, just 0.1 kilograms over the 15 – kilogram limit. While she thought it was not a big deal, the staff operating the machine refused to accept her bag, reports The Times Of India.

The woman was asked to make her baggage lighter by a mere 100 grams and she had to take out some things from her bag right there. She reportedly even asked if the extra 0.1 kilograms could be distributed among her friends’ bags, but the airline staff denied. The woman says it made her embarrassed.

“I requested for the 0.1kg to be adjusted with the bags of two of my friends whose baggage were under the stipulated weight, like in the conventional baggage drop method. But the airline staff refused this, saying the automatic bag drop machine is calibrated exactly for 15kg and no adjustment with fellow passengers is permitted,” said the woman, who was in Bengaluru to attend her graduation ceremony.

“The machine is calibrated to accept only 15kg bags as check-in luggage and usually there is no provision to make adjustments even if fellow passengers travelling under the same PNR are dropping in bags that weigh less than the stipulated weight. The machine won’t even accept bags of larger sizes or shapes during check-in,” a baggage-handling worker at KIA told TOI.
