Much of the packaged edibles we consume are prepared in factories and mills and we remain largely informed about the hygiene standards maintained there. While we prefer to give the benefit of the doubt to the manufacturers, a video from China’s biggest liquor manufacturing company may make you reevaluate your decisions. Tsingtao, China’s second-largest brewer, has landed in a big controversy after a man, thought to be a worker in the brewery, was filmed urinating inside a barrel of beer ingredients.
Tsingtao has launched an investigation into the incident and said that the police were alerted after the video went viral, drawing sharp criticism from both China and abroad. In the footage, a uniformed employee can be seen jumping over a wall and peeing into a big beer can. Since it went live online on Thursday, it has received millions of views on Chinese social media platforms, according to the BBC. Tsingtao claimed that the batch of malt was immediately locked off once authorities were notified.

The incident has caused significant damage to the reputation of the company. The Shanghai-listed company saw its shares drop as much as 7.5% in early trade on Monday when the video started going viral. Despite making some progress, the company’s shares ended Tuesday’s trading session at the Hong Kong Stock Exchange 3.34% lower.
The company’s official statement said, “Our company attaches great importance to the relevant video that surfaced from Tsingtao Brewery No. 3 on October 19. We have informed the police about this incident. The Public Security Organ has also been included in the investigation.”
Regarding whether the man seen in the video was an employee, the business made no comments. Local sources, however, claimed that neither the individual who urinated nor the person who posted the video online was directly employed by Tsingtao. There has been a growing demand for identifying the man in the video and apprehending him.
