Microsoft Chief Nadella Once Again Talks About His Company’s Big Mistake With Mobiles – News18

Satya Nadella was the CEO who decided to exit the business
Microsoft decided to end its focus on the mobile business much before the market really exploded and Nadella is the man who made the decision.
Microsoft was a major part of the mobile division with Windows Phone when it still had access to Nokia patents and technology.
The company decided to give up on the project altogether, giving Google all the control over the mobile ecosystem after it acquired Android in late 2000s. Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella continues to share the company’s mistake to stop focusing on the platform and serve people with more than two mobile operating systems.
Speaking in an interview with the Business Insider, Nadella is the latest Microsoft CEO to share this feeling and he feels the company was never able to see the future of a mobile device and how it will shape the industry for years to come. Nadella was asked whether Microsoft sees the end of Windows Phone as a mistake or a business decision that was forced on the company.
Nadella had taken over from Steve Ballmer in 2014 when he was put in place to spearhead a massive turnover for the company. And one of the decisions Nadella made was to exit the mobile business.
Nadella also explains that Microsoft could have handled this decision a lot better, which could have allowed the company to operate in the mobile business and who knows, eventually come up with a success formula that would have made it a strong contender in the market. It is hardly surprising to see Nadella talking about the mobile business in an interview once again, and it is clearly evident that exiting the mobile segment is the biggest regret that all the Microsoft chiefs have over the years.
Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer have often talked about their regrets and now when they see Apple making billions from selling iPhones, it must really hurt them. Ballmer has once ridiculed Apple for launching a mobile phone costing thousands of dollars, and fast-forward to 2023, that phone is one of the best in the market which has helped Apple become a trillion-dollar brand. To be fair, Nadella has made some brave decisions during his time at Microsoft and the company is surely benefiting from his clever moves, turning Microsoft into a hard-core business entity.
Having said that, Microsoft has made deals with Samsung to offer its Office suite of apps on Galaxy phones, while also working on apps like Phone Link which lets you mirror your smartphone to a Windows PC. Microsoft did enter the foldable segment with the Surface Duo lineup but its future is also in question with no new products in the pipeline and the man heading the Surface division has joined Amazon’s hardware business earlier this year.
There is no doubting that everyone has regrets, and giving up on the mobile business so easily would be one of the biggest that Nadella and Co. will always have with them.
