An eight-year-old boy was allegedly killed in a leopard attack in the latest incident of human-animal conflict in Odisha’s Nuapada district on Monday.
According to sources, the minor identified as Dambaru Majhi was playing in front of his house in the evening when a leopard grabbed him through its mouth and took him away into the forest, close to the Katingpani village.
Some villagers who witnessed the incident alarmed others, but the wild cat vanished into the forest. To find the missing boy, villagers and his family members armed with sticks, torches, and farming equipment went to the forest.
After searching for a long time, they found the boy lying under a huge stone. He had severe injury marks on his face and neck.
The villagers rushed the boy to the district hospital, but the doctors declared him dead. On being informed, the Dharambandha police went to the hospital and sent the body for post-mortem.
Villagers said that they have spotted two leopards moving in the periphery of the forest, a few days back.
Though leopards have been found in the Nuapada forest range earlier, it is the first time that wild cats intruded into the Dharambandha area, said a district forest official.
