Jasprit Bumrah’s early wicket, followed by three wickets from Mohammed Siraj saw Sri Lanka collapse to 3/4 chasing 358 runs against India at Wankhede Stadium.
Chasing 358 against India, the Sri Lankan top order crumbled under pressure as Kusal Mendis and Co. were reeling at 3/4 at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday during the World Cup clash.
The last time India met Sri Lanka, it was in the Asia Cup 2023 final when the Lankan Lions were all out for 50 runs and a similar scenario unfolded in Mumbai on November 2 when Jasprit Bumrah’s first ball wicket and Mohammed Siraj’s three early scalps haunted Sri Lanka’s top order.
Earlier, a masterclass from Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer saw the trio miss centuries but they helped propel India to a massive total of 357/8.

With their World Cup 2023 semifinal qualification hopes hanging with a thread, Sri Lanka faced a daunting total of 358 and the job was made all the more difficult when Bumrah removed Pathum Nissanka on a golden duck on the first ball of the Sri Lankan inning.
It was a historic feat that Jasprit became the first Indian bowler to get a wicket on the first ball of an inning in World Cups before Siraj joined the party.
In the second over, Siraj struck Dimuth Karunaratne on the pads, getting a wicket on the first ball of his over, repeating Bumrah’s heroics. In the space of five balls, Siraj would get his second wicket as Sadeera Samarawickrama was caught at second slip by Shreyas Iyer.
Sadeera was the highest run-scorer for Sri Lanka in the World Cup 2023 so far, but he failed to open his account and ended up giving away a nick as Siraj bagged his second wicket.
The Indian pacer would get his third wicket soon as Sri Lankan stand-in captain Kusal Mendis was castled by a brilliant in-swinging delivery from Siraj and the scoreboard read 3/4, with 358 needed to win.
Mendis had faced 10 balls but he managed to score just 1 run as Siraj bamboozled the Sri Lankan skipper and hit Cristiano Ronaldo’s ‘SIUU’ celebration.

Earlier in the previous inning, Kohli narrowly missed out on his 49th ODI hundred when he was dismissed on 88, while Gill also got dismissed on 92. Iyer also missed out on his century, departing for 82 as the trio helped India over 300.
Ravindra Jadeja put the finishing touches on India’s total as the Men in Blue got past 350 thanks to a 35-run knock from Ravindra Jadeja.
