Some people speculated that green liquid may be a fluorescent dye employed by plumbers to identify leaks in sewage systems.
In the bustling streets of New York, an unusual phenomenon caught people’s attention as a green liquid started accumulating along the edges of the roads. This peculiar occurrence sparked widespread discussions on social media, with individuals pondering the origin and cause of this slime-coloured substance. Images and videos of this enigmatic, gooey liquid began circulating on various social platforms, inciting a wave of humorous references to popular films such as Batman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Ghostbusters. Alongside the jests, there was also genuine concern, with many speculating whether the green liquid might be linked to a spill of antifreeze or dye.
On Saturday morning, The New York Post shared a video of a New York street side with a green puddle. Commenting on this clip, an Instagram user wrote, “It’s time to call Batman.. this is getting out of control now”. Another person referred to the Ghostbuster character Slimer and wrote, “Who you gonna call……. Ghostbusters!”.
On November 3, an X user also posted a photo that showed the green liquid congregating over the manhole covers and on the sides of the pavement. He wrote, “So there’s literal green sludge bubbling up from the ground next to World Trade Center right now”.
Another remarked, “It’s probably part of the district heating system. They literally add antifreeze to these systems. Maybe the green stuff to make it easier to see. Does it smell?”. In response, Pantelo wrote, “No noticeable/overwhelming smell but also wasn’t trying to really find out”.
Another person speculated, “It’s most likely either: 1) Dye used to track flow 2) Just today’s run-of-the-mill disaster. If it’s the latter, maybe we’ll get cool mutant turtles or something with powers out of this one though?”
The X’s Community Notes mentioned under Pantelo’s photo explained, “This is water full of green dye. Plumbers frequently use harmless, fluorescent green dye to detect leaks in plumbing and sewage systems.”
A staff member of O’Hara’s Restaurant and Pub, where the green liquid was spotted told Daily Mail that “city workers were testing the hotel’s sprinkler system across the street using a green foam, which left behind the eerie residue.”
It is interesting to note that this is not the first time that a similar green liquid has been spotted on New York street. In 2017, Gothamist, a non-profit local newsroom, reported that “some sort of mysterious toxic sludge has oozed its way to Midtown.”
The green slime was also spotted in 2014 on the streets of New York.
An X user Valérie T. Bart shared a picture of the liquid pooling on the street sides and wrote, “I like to think of antifreeze spill as LIQUID KRYPTONITE.”
