Vemuri Lakshmi Charvita, a third-grader, and Kadiri Manu Reshwant, a fifth-grader from Ongole have been excelling in the sport of roller skating.
The phrase ‘All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’ has encouraged many schools to promote extracurricular physical activities on their campus and include sports as part of their curriculum. Many students, along with their academics, bring laurels to their schools as well as the state by excelling in sports and winning tournaments. Two girl students from Ongole in the Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh have been excelling in a sport that is not much explored in India and hence makes their achievements all the more unique.
Vemuri Lakshmi Charvita, a third-grader, and Kadiri Manu Reshwant, a fifth-grader from Ongole have been excelling in the sport of roller skating and recently qualified for the state-level skating competition. They are both from Icon English Medium School.
The administration of Icon English Medium School, Ongole encourages students to pursue a passion for sports in addition to their academic studies. Srihari, a physical education teacher at this school, monitors the pupils’ sportsmanship and supports their success in appropriate sports. Srihari noticed a natural penchant for roller skating in both Lakshmi Charvita and Kadiri Manu Reshwant and decided to train them in the sport. They not only participated in the district-level skating competitions and won gold medals, but also qualified for the state-level competitions.
The school management has said that they are proud of the two girls and that they believe that they are suitable to go for a career in the sport if they so desire. The school has also appreciated teacher Srihari’s ability to recognise talent in his students. Srihari said that he feels happy that rural girls are finally getting the recognition they deserve by showcasing their talent.
The Roller Skating Federation of India, established in 1955 by SP Mumick, is responsible for overseeing the sport in India. Skaters are individually enrolled with a club. The clubs are members of district associations, which are connected to state associations by another affiliation. The RSFI has an affiliation with the state associations.
