As Diwali celebrations begin, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday vouched for local and handmade products over imported goods and urged Indians to prioritise shopping from their local markets on the occasion.

The prime minister also shared a video promoting the use of local products on his X profile and asserted that the “vocal for local” movement is gaining momentum across the country.

In the video shared on his X handle, the prime minister called on people to ensure that their priority during festivals is “vocal for local”.

“Let us together fulfil our dream of Atmanirbhar Bharat,” Modi said.

Modi also urged people to try to insist on using the UPI digital payment system to make payments rather than cash.

Modi’s Vocal For Local Selfies Campaign

PM Modi also asked them to share selfies with local products or artisans on his NaMo App through a made-in-India smartphone.

The BJP leader said he will share some of these pictures on social media to inspire others to be vocal for local, he said.

“The vocal for local movement is getting great momentum across the country,” the prime minister added.

During his monthly radio show ‘Mann Ki Baat’, PM Modi highlighted the use of ‘Vocal for Local’ during festivals.

“Like every time, this time too, in our festivals, our priority should be ‘Vocal for Local’ and let us together fulfil that dream, our dream is ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’. India is becoming the biggest manufacturing hub of the world,” he said.

Meanwhile, Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also promoted PM Modi’s vocal for local campaign and urged Indians to go shopping in local markets this Diwali.
