The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) civil service examination (CSE) is considered one of the most competitive examinations in India. Every year, thousands of aspirants appear for the exam after preparing for many years in order to get a job in the Indian administration. But only a few of them are able to clear it, as it requires a lot of hard work, patience and persistence. UPSC CSE has three stages, which include prelims, mains and the interview. While some aspirants are able to clear it in one go, others take years of preparation. Today, let’s take a look at the success story of one such aspirant who failed in his first four attempts but cleared the UPSC CSE on his fifth attempt.
Rahul Sankanur was born in the Hubli district of Karnataka. He was born into a humble family and was always a good student during his high school education. After completing his school education, he pursued engineering for four years. Later, he became an engineer and took a job at a popular multinational corporation. But he was not satisfied with his job and wanted to do something else. After working for two years at a company, he decided to quit his job and pursue UPSC. But the road was going to be tougher than Rahul had imagined.
On his first attempt in 2014, he could not reach the interview round. So, he decided to give another attempt in 2015 and reached the interview stage. He felt confident this time but failed to clear the last round. In 2016 and 2017, he could not clear the exam on his third and fourth attempts as well. He lost all hope, but his family and friends supported him. Finally, in 2018, he made his fifth attempt and was able to clear the UPSC CSE with an AIR of 17.
Rahul advised that aspirants should not only focus on bookish knowledge but ensure overall preparation as well. He also added that it is essential to be observant and aware of happenings around oneself. In an interview, he said, “Several people will try to demotivate you when it comes to cracking UPSC. It is important to keep your focus on the goal and not get bogged down by such distractions. It is important to stay away from negative people.”
