Bridges provide a safe passage for the people and transportation over water bodies, valleys, and roads. When people started to build bridges, no one could fathom the heights they would reach. Today, we will talk about the Eshima Ohashi Bridge in Japan. It is the largest frame bridge in Japan and the third largest in the world. As per the report on the Amusing Planet website, the Eshima Ohashi Bridge is a two-lane concrete road bridge. It connects the city of Matsue in Shimane Prefecture district and the city of Sakaiminato in Tottori Prefecture. It is 1.7 kilometres long, out of which the length of the bridge is 1.44 kilometres and the width is 11.3 metres. A Twitter user recently uploaded a clip of this bridge which gives an insight into its unique structure. The caption read, “Seeing videos like this, travellers expect that the Eshima Ohashi Bridge in Japan to be 45° inclined, while it has a less pronounced, 6.1% gradient. What we’re seeing is perspective distortion.” The video shows vehicles moving on the Eshima Ohashi. The clip has been distorted or shot in such a way that it looks like the steepest and scariest bridge, standing almost perpendicular to the ground.
Eshima Ohashi Bridge has dominated the headlines since 2015 because of its unique design. During that time, Daihatsu Motor Company had depicted this bridge in an advertisement for the Tanto Mini Van car. The motor company aimed to show that the Tanto Mini Van car is so powerful that it can easily climb the steepest hills. It is because of this reason that the motor company clicked such a shot of the bridge which made it appear much higher in comparison to its original height. Since then, pictures of the bridge have frequently gone viral on social media. People were quite shocked to see a “standing bridge” but the truth is that this bridge is not as steep as shown in the video. People who used to travel on it started spreading rumours that travelling on Eshima Ohashi Bridge feels like going on a roller coaster. The speed limit of the bridge is 40 km per hour.
