Accident and burn requires prompt medical attention at a hospital.

Taking precautions during Diwali is crucial for you and your loved ones.

Diwali, the festival of lights, is almost here. People have already started preparing for the celebrations. Everything during this festival holds great significance — from lighting the diyas, sharing sweets, and exchanging gifts to lighting firecrackers. Amid the festivities, it’s crucial to prioritise safety to prevent mishappenings and accidents while lighting firecrackers. Firecrackers cause air pollution, raising the likelihood of respiratory problems, skin allergies, and various health issues such as asthma, lung disease, and eye burns. In case of accidents, they can cause burns in individuals too.

Taking precautions during the Diwali season is crucial for you and your loved ones. Dr P Suresh Kumar, head of the department of appendectomy and reconstructive surgery of Madurai Rajaji Hospital, advises everyone to exercise caution during Diwali celebrations.

Dr P Suresh Kumar highlighted that bursting firecrackers on Diwali is common but it’s important to do so safely. In case you incur a burn from firecrackers, he recommends washing the affected area thoroughly with water. Additionally, he suggested wiping the area and applying oil if possible.

According to Dr P Suresh Kumar, accidents and burns require prompt medical attention at a hospital. He said we should avoid applying antiseptic, Dettol, tincture, or flour, as it may risk infection and lead to septic complications.

Here are 5 tips for treating firecracker burns effectively at home during diwali:

Cold Water

For minor burns, it’s advised to run cold water over the affected area or use a cold compress. This helps relieve pain, reduce swelling, and lower the risk of scarring.

Moisturiser

Apply moisturiser to the affected area to prevent dry skin and reduce blister chances. Consult a doctor before using any creams or lotions, and use painkillers only as prescribed.

Coconut Oil

Dispelling the myth that coconut oil is a cure-all, it does have valuable benefits. Notably, coconut oil, enriched with vitamin E, proves effective in addressing post-burn marks on the skin.

Honey

Honey proves to be a safe and effective remedy for mild to moderate burn wounds. Its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties help in providing treatment for first-degree burns.

Bandage

Use sterile gauze and apply a loose bandage to the affected area to speed up the healing process according to medical experts.
