Every year, people watch the large, vibrant balloons from the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade glide over their screens and down the meandering streets of New York City from the comfort of their homes. Even though these enormous inflating objects usually go through the motions without any hindrance, occasionally something goes wrong because of wind, rain, snow, or even a bothersome traffic sign. This year too, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has experienced a number of balloon mishaps that have now sparked a laughter fest on Instagram.
In a video doing the rounds on the internet, deflated yet colourful balloons of different cartoon characters could be seen attempting to take off but failing miserably. While Smokey Bear — an American campaign and advertising icon was seen losing air from within and crumpling down. One blue star-like balloon was captured floating aimlessly in mid-air without any strings attached to it. Netflix’s popular character Luffy from the manga series One Piece is also featured in the video, but in a deplorable condition — his hat had an evident tear presumably from being hit by a sharp tree branch. It floated almost close to the ground.
The last clip from the video showed an empty cheese structure kept on a wheel-like platform meandering away on its own in the road. Another character balloon in the video was seen floating slowly along the road, with holes in its hands — a result of fabric tearing at the place. According to a report by People magazine, there were inflation issues with animated characters like Snoopy, Greg Heffley from the Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and Uncle Dan balloon car.
As soon as the video surfaced on the internet, social media users were quick to react to it. Taking the deflation faults of the balloons positively, one user wrote, “Mishaps are a good thing; it shows Macy’s and its people are trying. All mistakes are a sign of progress, and odd things just happen regardless. Long Live Macy’s!!!!!” Noting one specific deflated balloon case, another shared, “I quite enjoyed the one with the giant Sonic balloon hitting the light post and tearing up because let’s be honest, that’s one of Sonic’s habits”. “Looks like the floats hit tree branches with those tears. They were flying low from the beginning of the parade,” came another remark.
