Australian spinner, Nathan Lyon took an open dig at England’s latest red-ball philosophy, ‘Bazball’ in a talk show as the age-old rivalry between Australia and England continues.
Australian red-ball veteran, Nathan Lyon took a cheeky dig and the new cricketing term coined by the English side, ‘Bazball’ at a talkshow in Australia. The off-spinner was asked his thoughts on the concept and he did not hold back his words.
The host of the show ‘The Front Bar’ asked Lyon what is Bazball and the spinner replied,”Well I’m 2-0 up against Bazball, so I’m pretty happy,” the hosts and Lyon shared a laugh.
For context, the Australian spinner was part of two tests in the five-match series which concluded in July 2023. He picked up nine wickets in the series in just two games. He was ruled out of the rest of the series due to a calf injury which led to his first injury layoff in his career. He has had an injury-free career so far with the spinner featuring for the Australian side in 100 consecutive Tests.
Lyon did not hold back as he shared his thoughts on the concept, he said,” To me, it’s a load of s**t if you ask me.”
“It’s a brand of English cricket that they want to keep going, it’s in the dictionary as well which is remarkable isn’t it?” Lyon asked sarcastically.
Australia also managed to retain the urn with the series finishing at a 2-2 draw. Australia managed to pick up a win in the first two games which took place in Birmingham and Lord’s.
Nathan Lyon is now reported to looking at a return to cricket in the Sheffield Shield which gives him some game time ahead of Pakistan’s tour of Australia which begins on December 14, 2023.
Nathan Lyon has been a big part of Australia’s success in the longer format with the off-spinner having a stellar record in the five-day format for the Aussies with a record of 122 Test matches where he has 496 wickets in the longest format. He will be looking to breach the 500-wicket mark and cement himself among the best spinners in the red-ball format as well.
