Dia Mirza has recently spoken on gender discrimination in the film industry. Diya has told that when she came into the industry, the number of actors was more. Because of this, discrimination took place on a large scale.
He has also told that during outdoor shoots, actresses were not even given the facility of vanity van. They had to change clothes behind a tree or stone. For many artists, junior artists used to make a circle of saree and bedsheet, in which they used to change clothes. There was no provision for a separate bathroom for the actresses.
Actresses were discriminated against at every turn.
In an interview given to BBC Hindi, Dia Mirza said- When I entered films, there were very few women working on the sets. Because of this, there was a feeling of discrimination at every turn. We were treated differently in every way.
The size of our van was smaller compared to the vanity vans of male actors. When Han used to go outdoors to shoot songs, there were no proper facilities for changing clothes. There was no provision for a bathroom.
Diya also told that if she or any actress used to come late on the set, they would get the tag of unprofessional. But this thing did not apply to male actors. Anyone faced any problem when he came late.
Asha Parekh has also gone through this pain
Asha Parekh also talked about this topic in an interview given to ANI during the Indian Film Festival of India. He had said- At that time when we used to go for shooting, there were no bathrooms in the studios and we used to sit there the whole day without going to the bathroom. Thankfully, I did not have any kidney related problems. Sometimes we would also change our clothes behind the bushes.
Poonam Dhillon brought the first vanity
First of all, in 1985-86, actress Poonam Dhillon got a vanity van made, which was inaugurated by Amitabh Bachchan. Poonam had written about this on social media in 2021 – I did not know that I was making history in the film industry, when I first started my makeup vanity van. Many artists thank me for bringing this concept to the film industry. Earlier there was a lot of difficulty in shooting on location. With no toilet, no place to change clothes or eat food, the artist had to spend time on location in the sun and dust.
