Liverpool legend and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher ripped into Marcus Rashford for his abysmal display against Newcastle United. Manchester United’s woes continue as Erik ten Hag’s men record another defeat in the Premier League this season.
After Sunday’s 3-3 thriller between Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, Carragher lashed out at Rashford on the Sky Sports discussion table. As per SportBible, he said, “Watching Marcus Rashford last night was an unacceptable performance for a few reasons…For Rashford and myself and Gerrard at Liverpool, it’s your job to fix it and drag others up with you.”
Saturday evening last week saw Newcastle shock Manchester United 1-0 to leapfrog them on the Premier League table. Newcastle had United’s number from the get-go as the Red Devils struggled to make an impact in the match. They were a little lucky to have conceded just a single goal given their performance on the evening. It was Anthony Gordon who found the back of the net for Newcastle thanks to a low cross from Kieran Trippier in the 55th minute.
Rashford, who just recently signed a new deal with a club in the summer, was substituted after just 61 minutes in the match due to his ineffectiveness. The player looked a little shattered when sitting on the bench as the match played out in their rivals’ favour.
Jamie Carragher further said that Marcus Rashford’s performance reminded him of the struggles that Anthony Martial had at the club.
“Watching Rashford he reminds me of Martial and that is worst possible thing you can say about him. Foreign player comes in and doesn’t really care. Rashford is now looking like Martial…As a local player, your job is to drag others up…What you’re asking for from Rashford is leadership. Those players have to look up to him saying that is Manchester United”, the Liverpool legend said, as per SportBible.
Marcus Rashford was phenomenal for the Red Devils last season which saw him score 30 goals across all competitions. Yet, he has only found the net twice this season while making 13 Premier League appearances for United, and has now gone 14 club games without a goal from open play.
His teammate and former captain Harry Maguire came to his defence suggesting that the player has been working hard. He mentioned how he had a phenomenal season last year and that everyone in the dressing room knew what he was about.
Manchester United now sit in seventh place on the Premier League table with eight wins in 14 games. They will next face Chelsea on December 7 at Old Trafford.
