Robert Downey Jr and Mark Ruffalo’s camaraderie is something to admire about. According to Variety, their friendship dates back 28 years when the duo met each other through either of their girlfriends at that time. Both have made a mark in Hollywood with their on-screen charisma and impeccable acting prowess. While Downey’s latest appearance in Oppenheimer earned him much praise, Ruffalo’s stellar performance in Poor Things highly entertained viewers. Recently at Variety’s Actors on Actors studio, the two stars talked about their latest releases and how they sometimes failed to comprehend the dialogues of their Marvel characters, unsure of what their characters meant.
During the conversation, Robert Downey Jr revealed he and Mark Ruffalo were left clueless about the multiple sci-fi incidents that occurred in the “decade-and-a-half Marvel run”. Agreeing, Ruffalo said that it was a “different world” where the actor thought that he was not fit to play the role. But it was Downey who always encouraged him to go for it. Chiming in, Downey added, “In the Marvel days, everything might change or we’re talking to a tennis ball. You and I, the science bros, we would have these long passages about absolute gobbledygook.”
Elaborating on the same, Robert Downey Jr highlighted the importance of the dialogues they said in Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films stating that they were an integral part of the character portrayal. To this, Mark Ruffalo agreed that these “bullshit” dialogues helped them understand and develop their MCU characters accordingly.
In the same interaction, Robert Downey Jr admitted that the experience he gathered while shooting for Marvel movies, helped him bag an important role in Oppenheimer too. The actor said that although he had fun on the Oppenheimer sets, he knew when was the right time to “tighten things” a bit and get serious. Sharing a small anecdote, Downey disclosed, “I found great joy in (making Oppenheimer). It was this moment where we were shooting something in Pasadena and Nolan just put this mag of 70-millimeter film — they were changing out mags, and he was like, ‘Hold this.’ And he just put it on my lap”.
Robert Downey Jr essayed the role of Tony Stark aka Iron Man in about 10 MCU films, beginning with the 2008 hit film Iron Man until Avengers: Endgame. On the other hand, Mark Ruffalo portrayed the character of Bruce Banner aka Hulk in eight MCU films.
