Cleaning up potatoes, especially when they have a whole layer of mud over them is not a pleasant experience. Washing dirty potatoes is easily one of the hardest kitchen-related tasks, that too when one needs to clear several kilos of them in one go. Many big restaurants and vegetable sellers now own specialised potato cleaning machines that are equipped with bristled brushes and push powerful jets of water to clean the potatoes. However, not everyone can access these industrial-grade machines.

Now a video, which shows a person washing a big load of potatoes inside a top-loading washing machine, is going viral. It is unclear when and where this video was taken.

In the comments, some people found this trick to be innovative and useful. However, others noted that it might be unhygienic to wash vegetables in machines that are also used to clean clothes.

Commenting on this video, a person sarcastically wrote, “Don’t try this, I tried it with my

washing machine

and potatoes started shooting towards the sky and they are now a star which is going to fall on earth.”

Raising concerns about this method’s safety, a person wrote, “Going to add many bacteria in potatoes don’t worry guys.”

Expressing an opposite sentiment, a person wrote, “This is amazing guru!” Another person noted that this is “New trick to wash, not to peel.”

This is not the only video that shows people using household appliances to clean potatoes.

In November this year, The Daily Nelly, a popular Instagram account with over 1.6 lakh followers, shared a video that showed a woman washing potatoes in a dishwasher.

In the video, the woman explains that she uses the dishwasher when she has to clean several bags of potatoes for occasions like making the Thanksgiving dinner.

The woman explained this “time saving” method and said, “Normally you would clean potatoes in a bowl, but you can’t fit that many. You can only fit five in a bowl. And we have three bags of potatoes, so the fastest way to wash is by putting them in your dishwasher.” She mentioned that one just had to choose the “rinse” option in the dishwasher and there was no need to add any cleaning liquid.

The video later showed that the potatoes were indeed clean after she opened the dishwasher. Showing off the results, the woman concluded, “They’re clean, you didn’t have to hand wash them. I’m telling you, it saves time on Thanksgiving or Christmas when you’re hosting a ton of people.”
