The way he pronounced frostbite as frostbit gave him the name ‘Frostbit Boy’ across the world.

Ruairi McSorley from Ireland gained popularity in 2015 after he spoke to a TV news crew on his way home from school on a snowy day. His TV appearance soon propelled him into viral fame, thanks to his odd accent. In the viral clip, Ruairi, who is dressed in his school uniform, complains about how he still has to go to school in bad weather. ‘Oh God it’s a desperate, wild time in the snow alright,’ Ruairi tells the interviewer. Talking about the harshness of the cold weather, McSorley explains that has to wear his socks in a special way to prevent frostbites and says, “You wouldn’t be long getting the ankles frostbit off ya.” The way he pronounced “frostbite” as “frostbit” gave him the name “Frostbit Boy” across the world.

Now Ruairi is 24 years old. He recently appeared on JaackMaate’s Happy Hour Podcast, a popular comedy podcast that airs every Monday and Thursday, on Spotify. During his appearance, Ruairi spoke about his unexpected fame and how he is trying to build a career as an “Irish auctioneer in America”. He mentions that he took an auction course in the USA and wants to build a career in the USA’s massive auctioning industry.

Interestingly, even after all these years, Ruairi’s accent was hard to understand. The podcast’s hosts struggled to understand what Ruairi was saying but his jolly persona nonetheless made the whole interaction fun.

On Friday, JaackMaate’s Happy Hour Podcast shared a clip from this episode on YouTube. Commenting on Ruairi’s appearance, a person wrote, “Genuinely one of the best guests you’ve had in awhile… funny, interesting and unique bloke.” Another wrote, “I’m from Belfast and I can just about understand him.”

In the podcast, Ruairi said that during his course, he was taught how to speak fast while hosting auctions. He explained that the auction host’s fast speech creates a sense of urgency amongst the buyers who are then prompted to bid more and more. He demonstrated how auctioneers speak rapidly as they present the objects and announce the bidding prices. The Irishman said that he practiced his speech by learning tongue twisters. During the show, he also showed how he would sell one of the host’s teeth if they were being auctioned.

In August 2021, Ruairi was in the news after he was rescued from the sea. Ruairi was staying at the seaside caravan park near the Inch beach when he decided to go for an impromptu swim without informing anyone. He then ended up spending 12 hours in the water as he was caught in the rough waters. Luckily he was rescued by the volunteers of the non-profit RNLI Lifeboat Station in a lifeboat. He was taken to hospital for hypothermia.
