Mohammed Shami has been nominated for the Arjuna Award after his stellar performance for the country in the 2023 ODI World Cup where he finished as the highest wicket-taker.

It is reported that Mohammed Shami has been nominated for the prestigious Arjuna Award this year. After his stellar campaign in the World Cup where he shattered various records, the pacer now finds himself nominated for the second-highest sporting honour in India.

According to PTI, it is reported that the nomination was made at the request of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as he did not feature in the original list of nominees.

Mohammed Shami managed to finish as the leading wicket-taker in the 2023 ODI World Cup campaign with a tally of 24 wickets despite being on the bench for the first four games of the tournament. He also ended up as the highest wicket-taker in ODI World Cups surpassing the legendary Zaheer Khan and Javagal Srinath in just 14 innings in the marquee tournament.

Shami made his World Cup debut in the 2015 edition where he finished with 17 wickets in seven games followed by the next edition in 2019 where he picked 14 wickets in just four games.

Despite India not going all the way to win the World Cup, Shami was praised by many for his valiant performances throughout the tournament. The pacer was almost unplayable throughout the tournament and many in hindsight were wondering why he was left out in the first place.

Shami joins an elite list of athletes who have been nominated for the Arjuna Award which includes the likes of Aishwary Pratap Singh Topar who excelled at the Asian Games 2023 and many others.
