Today's story is about the promising and powerful actor of Malayalam cinema, Master Sathyan. Although his name was Satyanesh, however, he had such expertise in realistic acting that everyone called him Master Satyan. In the history of Indian cinema, when melodramatic roles were preferred, Master Sathyan achieved stardom through method and realistic acting. Not only on screen, he was a hero in real life also. Before coming into films, he left his job as a clerk and became an Army Commissioned Officer in the British Raj. A coincidence brought Master Sathyan, who became a police inspector after World War-2, to films.

With his talent, Sathyan put Malayalam cinema on the map of Indian cinema. His films used to be such, which are still the favorite films of superstars like Kamal Haasan and Mohanlal. Even today, three big awards are given in the name of Master Sathyan in Malayalam cinema, who left this world at the age of 58 due to leukemia.

Read the story of Master Satyan's mastery in every field in a few years, in 3 chapters-

9 November 1912.

Born in Thrikkannapuram, Thiruvananthapuram, Master Sathyan's full name was Cheruvilakathu Veetil Manuel Styanaesan Nadar. Master Sathyan, who was the eldest of the Christian family, had four younger brothers, Chhelaiya, Nation, Devdas and Jacob. While studying Master of Arts, Sathyan had passed the scholar exam. As soon as he completed his studies, he got a job as a clerk in the Kerala Secretariat.

Left clerk job and became army officer in 1 year

Within a year, Master Satyan got bored with the routine job of a clerk and left the job to do something bigger. He worked hard for months and finally in 1941, his hard work bore fruit. Master Satyan got the job of Viceroy's Commissioned Officer in the British Army.

Left army job after World War-2

During the British Raj, Master Satyan was posted in Manipur, Burma (now Myanmar), Malaysia during World War-2. After the end of World War-2, Master Sathyan left the army job and came to Travancore and became a police inspector in the state police.

Impressed by the look, the producer offered the film

It was a great coincidence for Master Sathyan to make a place in films. Sathyan was an inspector at the North Police Station in Alappuzha during the Militant Communist Movement of Travancore. During this time he met film musician Sebastian Kunjukunju Bhagwatar. Their friendship deepened and Sebastian started taking her with him to film parties. During a party, Sebastian introduced Master Sathyan to some film personalities and producers.

Got the movie but it was never made

At the party itself, a producer was so impressed by Master Sathyan's strong personality that he promised to give him work in a film. However, after the party, Sathyan neither got a call from the producer nor did he get any film offer. That film was not made, but Satyan was now determined to enter films.

When he came to know that the chief editor of the daily newspaper and his neighbor K. Balakrishnan is making a film, so he immediately started gathering information about it. With the intention of working in a film, he started working with his neighbour. Contacted Balakrishnan. Of. Balakrishnan was so impressed by Sathyan's looks that he cast him in the film Tyagaseema.

When Inspector Satyan became a hero, the police department denied it.

To enter films, Satyanesh shortened his name to Satyan. As soon as he started shooting for the film, there was an uproar in the police department. When Deputy Superintendent of Police Mary Arputham came to know about this, she clearly said that Sathyan would not be allowed to work in films while doing police work.

There was a threat to his job, but this too was small compared to his passion of becoming a hero. He resigned following the rules of the police department. For self-respect, Sathyan also left the film Tyagaseema, even though some part of that film had been shot. In his place, Prem Nazir was made the hero in the film.

During the shooting of the film Tyagaseema, producer and director P. Subramaniam was quite impressed by Sathyan's acting. When he started his production company Neela Productions in 1952, he chose Sathyan as the hero for his first film Atmasakhi. In this way, the Malayalam film Atmasakhi, released in 1952, became Sathyan's first film. From the very first film, Sathyan caught everyone's attention with his muscular body and strong style.

Two years after the success of the film Atmasakhi, Sathyan was seen in the film Neelakkuyil in the role of an upper class man named Sreedharan Nair, who loves a Dalit girl. This film proved to be a milestone in the history of Malayalam cinema. The film was discussed not only in the Malayalam region but across the country. He proved himself a Malayali superstar with his excellent acting in Malayalam films like Odayil Ninnu, Daham, Yakshi.

The character of Othenal in the film Othenam Thacholi played by Master Sathyan became famous across the country. His performance became a landmark for Malayalam cinema. This historical drama film won the National Award for Best Malayalam Film in 1964.
