What Is Sploshing? The Food Fetish Taking Over Social Media – News18

Last Updated: December 15, 2023, 19:01 IST

Sploshing is part of wet and messy (WAM) fetishism.

Sploshing can be explained as a form of sexual fetishism in which a person becomes aroused by playing or watching someone play with food.

In recent years there has been an increase in videos or forums that revolve around ‘sploshing’, a type of food fetish. These videos often show people playing messily with food items like whipped cream, cakes, juices, and syrups. Sploshing is a part of the larger wet and messy (WAM) fetish community where people also indulge in non-food substances like slime and mud for sexual arousal.

Kink educator and sploshing expert Darla Delour explained sploshing to Glamour UK and said, “To understand what sploshing is, we need to understand what it’s not. It does not involve bodily fluids. It’s not about using vegetables as dildos, nor is it adding a splash of whipped cream to your body to spice things up in the bedroom.”

Delour added that the clinical term for sploshing is sitophilia. At the most basic level, it refers to people getting aroused by playing or watching others play with food in a sexual context. Sploshing is also known as food play.

Ayesha Hussain, a sexuality activist tried to explain the appeal of sploshing to Men’s Health and said, “There are aspects of the mouth being a vessel that are inherently sexual. It opens, it’s moist, and when you get aroused, your mouth opens more and gets more lubricated.” Hussain added that the societal taboo around playing with food also adds to the appeal of sploshing. She said, “How many times were we told not to play with our food? There is a very alluring quality to the ‘forbidden.’”

Despite its popularity, many people find sploshing unappealing and even unarousing. However, Dr. Suzy, a sex therapist, told Screenshot media, that many people find the repulsive aspect of sploshing as a turn-on. She theorised, “The ‘yuck factor’ is an important aspect of sploshing, even for those of us who love it. Sometimes, things that gross us out also arouse us. In the right context, of course.”

Sex educator Lola Jean told Glamour UK that food-related videos don’t have to be explicitly sexual for them to appeal to those who have a sploshing fetish. She asserted the importance of individual preference and context and said, “The thing about fetish is it’s completely contextual. Anyone’s video could be a fetish video. Everyone’s into a lot of different things. I could watch the Great British Bake Off and jerk off. And so when you start policing certain things and naming things ‘fetish content’, that’s not necessarily true. It depends on who is watching it.”
