History of Vijay Diwas

The 1971 war was triggered by a rebellion in East Pakistan against the then-Pakistani government. After the Awami League, led by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, registered a thumping victory in the 1970 elections, the Pakistani military was accused of committing atrocities on Bengali-speaking people in the region.

Following the elections, the Pakistani military used force to influence the results. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India, intervened and decided to give refuge to people who fled East Pakistan.

While Gandhi tried to seek international intervention on the matter, the situation escalated as Pakistan launched air strikes on 11 Indian airbases on December 3, 1971.

In retaliation, Gandhi ordered Army Chief General Sam Manekshaw to launch a full-scale war against Pakistan. The 13-day war resulted in the birth of Bangladesh. In August 1972, India and Pakistan signed the Shimla agreement as part of which India released 93,000 prisoners of war.

Significance

December 16 holds great significance in the history of modern India. It serves as a reminder of how India emerged as a celebrated nation during the war against Pakistan in 1971. On this day, India honours the bravery and strength of its armed forces. The 1971 war is also said to have altered the relationship between the US and the South Asian region.
