British-Australian artist Bruce Munro is set to unveil his Field of Light public art installation on Manhattan’s East Side. The immersive piece will occupy over 6 acres, stretching from 38th Street to 41st Street on First Avenue. The mixed-use Freedom Plaza is located near the United Nations Headquarters. The installation is scheduled to remain in place for a year.
A new art installation is set to honour New York City as a symbol of freedom and a global home. According to a press release, the installation will feature 17,000 low-light, fibre-optic spheres that glow in various colours, forming a landscape resembling a painted scene. Notably, these spheres will be powered by solar energy, showcasing a fusion of art, technology, and nature.

The upcoming Field of Light installation is just one part of the exciting lineup for Freedom Plaza. Reports suggest that the plaza will host a museum dedicated to human rights and freedom of speech, thought, and expression. The museum’s collection will include pieces from global artists, encompassing expansive experiential installations and historical artefacts like segments from the authentic Berlin Wall. Plans for the waterfront area also include walking paths, shopping and dining choices, a gaming facility, and a hotel.
London-born artist Bruce Munro, known for his exploration of natural light and interest in human experiences, has showcased his work globally. These include the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Sharjah Museum of Art in the UAE, and London’s Victoria & Albert Museum. Munro has left a lasting mark on the artistic realm as his creations are now included in permanent collections worldwide.
Bruce Munro shared his vision for Field of Light at Freedom Plaza. He expressed hope that the installation would touch hearts and inspire people of all ages to draw inspiration from it and create something meaningful to share with others.
Stefan Soloviev, Chairman of Soloviev Group, the organization overseeing the development of Freedom Plaza, expressed happiness about collaborating with Bruce Munro on the project. Soloviev noted Munro’s shared dedication to using sustainable and innovative technologies to inspire creativity.
The Field of Light exhibition will be open to the public from this winter onwards and will remain on display for 12 months.
