Battle of Baghpat turns 3 as social media walks back to the iconic ‘Chaat’ war and their ‘Einstein Uncle’.

If you’re someone who finds fascination in historical battles like those of Panipat or Haldighati, or perhaps the mythological tales of Ravan Vadh, then prepare for another epic encounter that’s etched into modern folklore. Three years ago, the ‘Battle of Baghpat’ erupted in this UP town, pitting two groups of chaat sellers against each other, and even now, social media continues to pay homage to the bold souls who etched their names in ‘history’ on that eventful day in 2021.

As ‘X’ (Twitter) commemorates the third anniversary of the ‘Battle of Baghpat,’ memories come flooding back. Among the memorable moments of the skirmish, one standout was a kurta-clad vendor with mehendi-adorned hair, seen heroically pinning down rival shopkeepers during the chaos. The video footage captured several men engaging in combat with sticks and rods, while bystanders looked on in disbelief. It was a spectacle reminiscent of a ’90s Bollywood blockbuster, with many users enhancing the drama by adding cinematic music to the clip.

But it was Harinder, the chaat seller with henna-streaked hair, who stole the spotlight and became a social media sensation, affectionately dubbed “Einstein Uncle/Chacha” or “Virus” (from ‘3 Idiots’) for his distinctive hairstyle. His wink in a photo taken by the cops after their detainment only added to his allure.

So, while “Einstein Chacha” may have bid adieu to the hairstyle that catapulted him to ‘memedom’, the collective memory refuses to let him fade away, along with the entire saga of the battle!

For context, the clash erupted between two rival factions of chaat vendors, Shiv Chaat Bhandar and Nav Durga Chaat Bhandar, on the bustling thoroughfare humorously named Atithi Bhawan. The altercation went viral after a local journalist, struck on his right hand by a rod, captured the fracas on camera. Subsequently, eight individuals from both camps found themselves behind bars, slapped with charges including attempted murder, as the incident made its way to the hallowed halls of the state police headquarters in Lucknow.
