Considering the rapidly changing climate, global efforts to preserve our environment are more crucial than ever. Recycling is a key strategy in minimising waste, and initiatives like the one undertaken by the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) are garnering praise with an innovative approach of repurposing a discarded bus into a functional canteen for its staff.
The bus covered a total of 10,64,298 km before it was scrapped and converted to a mobile canteen, an official reportedly said. This commendable effort was spearheaded by four employees at the depot.
“The transformed vehicle will serve as a canteen for breakfast and lunch at various locations, including units and bus stops where canteen facilities are not available,” the official mentioned.
A clip was shared on Instagram handle the Bangalore 360 revealing the transformed interior of the canteen, showcasing its vibrant makeover and practical layout.
The accompanying caption provided details on the canteen’s intended location, stating, “BMTC converts a scrapped vehicle into a mobile canteen for its staff. It is likely to be stationed at Peenya/Yeshwantpur depot.”
In the video, the bus interior showcases tables arranged amidst numerous seats. Additionally, a washbasin has been thoughtfully included for convenience.
An official elaborated on the features highlighting the fact that the canteen’s ventilation and lighting systems have been carefully designed. “Among these features are seating and table arrangement, a fan to ensure comfort, and a convenient wash basin. Additionally, the canteen is equipped with a reliable drinking water system. The ventilation and lighting systems have been carefully designed, including a glass window on the roof to provide natural illumination and ventilation. Furthermore, both sides of the bus are equipped with additional ventilation and lighting systems, ensuring a pleasant and well-lit environment for users,” an official explained.

BMTC’s innovative initiative captured the attention of netizens, who commended their dedication to environmental preservation. Now serving hot meals and beverages to BMTC employees, the mobile canteen has garnered significant interest, amassing over 60,000 views on Instagram.
“This happens only in Namma Bengaluru,” a user commented.
“Are there any chances for common people to get a scarp bus to start up a food truck?” inquired another.
Back in 2019, both the Karnataka and Arunachal Pradesh state governments implemented a comparable initiative: transforming old buses into classrooms stocked with books for the children of daily-wage laborers. This provided an opportunity for the children while their parents worked at construction sites.
