Modi praised Vyjayanthimala and noted that the legendary actress is admired for her “exemplary contribution to the world of Indian cinema.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently met Padma Vibhushan awardee and legendary actress Vyjayanthimala in Chennai. On Monday, PM took to his official X (formerly known as Twitter) account and shared pictures from their meeting. In the photos, he was seen interacting with Vyjayanthimala as he also greeted her with folded hands. Modi praised Vyjayanthimala and noted that the legendary actress is admired for her “exemplary contribution to the world of Indian cinema.”
“Glad to have met Vyjayanthimala Ji in Chennai. She has just been conferred the Padma Vibhushan and is admired across India for her exemplary contribution to the world of Indian cinema,” he wrote.

Vyjayanthimala was named in the list of recipients for the Padma Vibhushan in January of this year. Besides her, Chiranjeevi and 132 others were also conferred with Padma awards. Of these eight were from Tamil Nadu including Vyjayanthimala. Padma Awards – one of the highest civilian Awards of the country are conferred in three categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. The Awards are given in various disciplines/fields of activities, viz.- art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc.
Vyjayanthimala Bali is one of the Indian Cinema’s finest actors. She made her acting debut at the age of 16 with the Tamil film Vaazhkai (1949). Her first Hindi movie was Bahar, which was released in 1951. Later, Bali also worked in several films from the 1950s and 1960s, including Devdas, Naya Daur, Aasha, Sadhna, Gunga Jumna, Sangam and Jewel Thief. Interestingly, she was also awarded Padma Shri in the year 1968.
