A minibus driver’s bravery and a dramatic speed-off saved the lives of at least 35 pilgrims being chased by dacoits on the Amravati-Nagpur highway in Maharashtra. The pilgrims were on their way from Shegaon in Buldhana district to Nagpur on Sunday, when a car-borne gang tried to overtake the minibus they were travelling in.

The trigger-happy hijackers reportedly chased the vehicle for around 30km on the highway. Still, bus driver Khomdev Kawade held his nerve in the face of a volley of bullets and swerved past the miscreants before safely transporting the passengers to a nearby police station, according to a report by Times of India.

As per the report, shortly after pilgrims left for Nagpur from Ambe Mata temple in Amravati, Kawade noticed the bus was being by a vehicle after they crossed Nandgaonpeth toll naka.

Initially, he tried to allow the vehicle to overtake, before bullets began flying. The robbers fired four rounds at the windscreen.

Most bullets missed him by a whisker, barring one that lodged in his hand, the TOI report said adding that the injured bus driver maintained his calm and he did not lose control.

Trundling, bleeding, and exhausted, he swerved past the hijackers at Sawadi village, 100km from Nagpur, and finally arrived at Teosa police station.

“The heroic driver ensured all pilgrims were safe,” TOI report quoted a police officer as saying.

Amravati police later escorted the bus back to Nandgaonpeth police station, and the driver was rushed to a primary health center.

Police also scoured CCTV footage from several entry and exit points of Nagpur to zero in on the dacoits. The video showed the getaway vehicle moving towards the city, but then taking the Kamptee-Kanhan route from Gondkheri toll naka towards Jabalpur highway, police said.

It added that the highway gang had stolen a vehicle with a UP registration number from Nashik a few days ago and a theft FIR, too, was registered.
