Delhi Capitals suffered a batting collapse after opting to bat first and Royal Challengers Bangalore chased down the target with three deliveries to spare.

Delhi Capitals captain Meg Lanning was left in tears after witnessing Royal Challengers Bangalore beat them in the WPL 2024 final on Sunday night. It was the second season in a row that the Lanning-led DC entered the final after topping the league stage before losing in the title clash.

DC were off to a flier after opting to bat first at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. The opening pair of Lanning and Shafali Verma added 64 runs before being separated.

The dismissal of Shafali off the first delivery of the seventh over triggered a collapse from which DC never recovered. They lost three wickets in that over, bowled by Sophie Molineux.

RCB spinners took control of the game as Shreyanka Patil finished with a four-wicket haul while Asha Sobhana took two. DC were bowled out for 113 in 18.3 overs.

Chasing a low total, RCB weren’t in a rush and carefully planned their chase to comfortably chase it down for the loss of just two wickets.

Richa Ghosh hit the winning four for RCB sending their camp into wild celebrations. However, DC players exhibited contrasting emotions with their captain Lanning getting emotional while being consoled by a member of the support staff.

“Obviously disappointing not to get it done,” Lanning said. “Finals are about playing well on the day. Congratulations to RCB – you outplayed us tonight.”

“It all happened relatively quickly as it tends to do. As we’ve seen in this tournament, crazy things happen. Full credit to RCB, they fought back really nicely and deserved the win,” she added.

DC Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly was present at the venue and he lauded the ‘best team’ of the tournament for two great seasons.

“Well done Delhi Capitals .. Two back to back finals .. the trophy may not have come our way .. but we will get to finals again and win .. well done Meg Lanning and the team.. u we’re the best team in the tournament.. well done RCB .. to come back from 3rd team in the league to beat two strong teams in 3 days is special .. enjoy the trophy,” Ganguly posted on X (formerly Twitter).
