India has stepped out of the colonial mentality and is not aping the West anymore, lyricist and adman Prasoon Joshi and India’s G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant said at the CNN-News18 Rising Bharat Summit on Tuesday. They were speaking during a session titled ‘Incredible India: Destination Bharat’.
Discussing ‘Brand Bharat’, Kant said at the summit that India is going back to its roots.
“What we have achieved in digitisation, climate change, infrastructure… there is a huge sense of national pride. We are not aping the West anymore, vestiges of colonialism have gone. We are going back to our roots. We want to be a modern progressive nation based on our own civilisation. Bharat gives you that sense as the time now is to be aspirational,” Kant said.
“Bharat brand works best when we differentiate on our strengths. It’s about encapsulating what we have achieved in our growth, quantum leap in digitisation and infrastructure. Time is now to leapfrog,” he said.
Talking about the successful conduct of the G20 Summit during India’s presidency of the grouping last year, Kant said: “Normally, the G20 is held in one city. Prime Minister Narendra Modi wanted it to be held in 60 cities for it to become the people’s G20. It was used to spread culture… we made it pan-India presidency,” he said.
Agreeing with Kant, Prasoon Joshi said India has finally shed its colonial mindset.
“The colonial past forced us to believe that whatever we were doing was wrong. We have come out from that colonial mentality.”
Asked about the branding of India as ‘Bharat’, the lyricist said: “It should be left to the people what they feel…. ‘Goonj Raha Hai Bharat’ should be the tagline for Bharat.”
