The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League is set to unfold on Friday, March 22. A total of 10 franchises will be competing for glory in the three-month T20 extravaganza. The opening game of the tournament will be played between the Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore.
This year’s campaign could see bowlers lead the show given how the top two IPL auction purchases this season were pacers. The Australian duo of Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc were sold for a fee of Rs 20.5 crore and 24.75 crore, respectively. Yuzvendra Chahal
Yuzvendra Chahal is the leading wicket-taker in IPL history with 187 scalps in just 145 matches. He has represented three different teams in the competition’s history including the Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Rajasthan Royals. Chahal also won the Purple Cap award with RCB in 2022.
Dwayne Bravo
All-rounder-turned-bowling coach, Dwayne Bravo picked up 183 wickets in 161 games to secure the second place on this list. He has won the Purple Cap twice with the Chennai Super Kings. Bravo has also represented multiple franchises in the competition including Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Lions.

Piyush Chawla
Indian spinner Piyush Chawla is the third-highest wicket-taker in the competition’s history. The veteran bowler has taken a total of 179 scalps in 181 games from 2008 to 2023. He has represented four IPL teams in his career but is majorly remembered for his time at Kolkata Knight Riders and his final shot that won the franchise the 2014 title.
Amit Mishra
Taking the fourth spot on this list is Amit Mishra with 173 wickets. In his 16-year-long IPL career, Amit has played a total of 161 games for teams including the Delhi Capitals, Lucknow Super Giants and Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Ravichandran Ashwin
One of India’s most impactful spinners, Ravichandran Ashwin has consistently shown up in the IPL as well. The veteran spinner boasts a tally of 171 wickets in 197 games played from 2008 to 2023. He has represented five teams in the tournament’s history.
Lasith Malinga
Representing the colours of the Mumbai Indians for a decade, Lasith Malinga plucked 170 wickets for the franchise from 2009 to 2019. He played a total of 122 games, winning the Purple Cap in 2011.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar
Sunrisers Hyderabad pacer Buvneshwar Kumar takes the seventh place in this list for his 170-wicket haul in the tournament’s history. A slightly weaker economy put him below Malinga. Bhuvneshwar has made a significant impact in the IPL, being one of only two players to win the Purple Cup twice.
Sunil Narine
One of the Kolkata Knight Riders’ old guards, Sunil Narine has chomped through 163 wickets in the tournament. He made his debut in 2012 and has played 162 games in his career. Narine has been the franchise’s leading wicket-taker in both years they won the title including 2012 and 2014.
Ravindra Jadeja
Chennai’s all-round superstar, Ravindra Jadeja has scalped 152 wickets in the IPL. The veteran Indian cricketer has played 226 games in the competition’s history, representing teams including Chennai Super Kings, Gujarat Lions, Kochi and Rajasthan Royals. He recently helped CSK lift their fifth title by scoring 10 runs in two balls against Gujarat Titans in the final.
Harbhajan Singh
Widely regarded as one of the best spinners of his generation, Harbhajan Singh takes 10th place with 150 IPL wickets to his name. He played a total of 163 games for three IPL franchises in his career.
