NATIONAL

1. GPS will be installed on all vehicles used in elections in Bengal: On April 9, the Election Commission has issued instructions to install GPS in all vehicles used in the Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal. The Commission has talked about installing GPS to track people and vehicles involved in election duty.

Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar has given strict instructions to the administration regarding this.

According to the Election Commission, the movement of polling material including EVM can be monitored through GPS.
This will also ensure that they are not tampered with while being taken to the strong room.
The Commission has also appointed Joint Secretary in the School Education Department, Arnab Chatterjee, as Joint Chief Electoral Officer.
The Election Commission has directed the Home Ministry to deploy 100 more Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in West Bengal.
The Commission also said that the companies should be deployed on or before April 15.
On the instructions of the Election Commission, the Home Ministry will deploy 55 companies of CRPF and 45 companies of Border Security Force (BSF) in West Bengal.

2. India gets Igla-S missile: On April 8, the Indian Army received the first batch of 24 Russian-made Igla-S Man Portable Air Defense Systems (MANPADS) with 100 missiles under a major deal. The Igla-S system consists of a single launcher and one missile.

It is a man-portable air defense system, which is fired on the shoulder to destroy enemy aircraft.

It can also identify aerial targets like cruise missiles and drones.
Igla-S consists of 9M342 missile, 9P522 launching mechanism, 9V866-2 mobile test station and 9F719-2 test set.
This missile can go maximum up to 22 thousand feet.
It moves towards the target at a speed of 2,266 kilometers per hour.
India had signed a deal with Russia to purchase 120 launchers and 400 missiles in November 2023.
Through this deal, the very short-range air defense capability of the Indian Army is to be increased.
A deal for Igla-S system has been made for deployment in the high hilly areas on the northern border.

3. Deepak Mehrotra becomes the new MD and CEO of Aakash Education: On April 8, edtech startup Byju's owned company Aakash Education Services Limited has appointed Deepak Mehrotra as the new Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The post was vacant after the resignation of Abhishek Maheshwari last year in September 2023.

Deepak Mehrotra has over 35 years of experience across sectors including FMCG, Telecommunication and Education.
Earlier he was MD at Ashirwad Pipes from 2018 to 2023.
Apart from this, he has also worked in leadership positions in Pearson India, Bharti Airtel, Coca-Cola and Asian Paints.
Byju's had acquired Aakash Education Services Limited in the year 2021 for about $1 billion.
Aakash Education provides coaching to students preparing for competitive exams.

4. Swiggy starts food delivery service on water: On April 8, Swiggy has now started its food delivery services on water also. The company has started it from Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir. Swiggy said that the company has expanded its services to deliver food to houseboats on Srinagar's iconic Dal Lake.

Swiggy has partnered with Shikara operators for delivery.

The company's delivery partners will use the city's famous Shikara boats to reach these floating houseboats.
Swiggy has partnered with Shikara operators to ensure delivery at tourist attractions.
These operators are also compensated for extended delivery times.
Swiggy started operations in Srinagar in 2022.
More than 300 restaurants of Srinagar are included on the company's platform.

5. Cinematographer Gangu Ramsay passed away: On April 7, Bollywood's renowned cinematographer Gangu Ramsay passed away at the age of 83. He was ill for a long time and was admitted to a private hospital in Mumbai. Gangu Ramsay was famous for horror films.

Gangu Ramsay was one of the seven sons of famous film producer FU Ramsay.

He did cinematography in more than 50 films under the banner of Ramsay Brothers.
These films include many horror films like 'Veerana', 'Band Darwaza', 'Purana Mandir', 'Do Gaj Zameen Ke Neeche'.
Along with this, he also made a classic film like 'Khoj' with Rishi Kapoor.
Gangu Ramsay also produced the TV show 'The Zee Horror Show' from 1993 to 2001.
Apart from this, he also worked for TV series 'Saturday Suspense', 'Nagin' and 'Jimbo'.

6. South Korea launches second military spy satellite: On April 8, South Korea launched its second military spy satellite into space. This satellite was sent into space by SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA.

The satellite was placed in Earth's orbit about 45 minutes after launch.

This satellite is equipped with Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sensor.
Which can capture data in any weather using microwave.
This satellite was launched to keep an eye on North Korea.
South Korea plans to install five military spy satellites in space by 2025.

History of 09 April: On this day in 1965, the war between India and Pakistan started. Pakistan Army had attacked Sardar Post located in Kutch, Gujarat.
