The league stage of the 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) has ended. In just 70 matches, 10 teams have hit more than 2000 fours and more than 1200 sixes. This time 14 centuries were also scored, which is the highest in 17 years.
Along with boundaries, there were also changes in powerplay score, average score and wicket fall rate in the 2024 IPL. Know in 6 factors how much IPL has progressed till 2024 compared to 2008.
Factor-1: Powerplay
i. Average score increased by 20%
When the IPL started in 2008, the average powerplay score in 59 matches was 46 runs. That means teams were scoring 46 runs in the first 6 overs. The average powerplay score remained at 46 for 16 years till 2023, but this season the batsmen dominated and an average of 55 runs were scored in the first 6 overs. Earlier, only in the seasons of 2017, 2018 and 2023, the average powerplay score could exceed 50, but even then 52 runs remained the highest average powerplay score.

ii. Best score of T-20 also made in powerplay
Sunrisers Hyderabad’s powerplay batting was the most explosive in 2024. The team crossed the score of 100 runs twice in 6 overs, which happened for the first time in the IPL season. SRH achieved this feat against Lucknow and Delhi. Against Delhi, the team scored 125 runs, which is the biggest powerplay score in T-20 history. Earlier, only CSK in 2014 and KKR in 2017 could score centuries in the powerplay.

Factor-2: Average Score
i. The average score of the first innings reached near 200
In 2008, the average score in the first innings was 161, in 2009 the score dropped to 150 and in 2024 the average score increased to 191. Till 2023, the average score in the first innings in 16 years was only 164 runs, in 2024 the average score increased by 27 runs. The average score of the first innings in the first two seasons was 156 runs, whereas in the last two years it increased to 187.

Factor-3: Century
i. A century is being scored in every 5th match, earlier it used to take 14 matches
In 2008, 6 centuries were scored in 59 matches of the tournament, i.e. an average of one century in every 10 matches. In 2009, this figure dropped to an average of 30 matches, but in 2024, a century is going to be scored in every 5th match. If we take the average of 16 years till 2023, then 14 matches were required for a century, now it has reduced by 3 times to only 5. That means now a century is scored in every 5th match.

ii. Maximum 14 centuries have been scored in the 17th season
In IPL 2024, 14 centuries have been scored till the league stage itself, which is the highest in an IPL season. Earlier in 2023, 12 centuries were scored, that is, 26 centuries were scored in the last 2 years. In comparison, only 6 centuries could be scored in 2008 and only 2 centuries in 2009. That means, 225% more centuries have been scored in the last 2 years as compared to the first 2 years.

Factor-4: Fours
i. An average of 30 fours were hit in the match
In the 2008 season, an average of 29 fours were hit in every match, in 2024 this number increased to 30. That means the average number of matches per match did not increase much. However, for the first time in 17 years the average number of fours hit in a match has touched 30.

ii. More than 2000 fours have been hit for the third consecutive season
2071 fours have been hit in the 2024 league stage, more than 2 thousand fours have been hit in the IPL for the third consecutive season. Before this, the only time in 2013, more than 2000 fours were hit. This number has increased significantly compared to the initial season of 2008. Only 1702 fours were hit in 2008 and 1316 fours in 2009.

Factor-5: Sixes
i. 55% more sixes are being hit in a match
There was not much change in the number of fours hit, but the speed of sixes hit increased rapidly. In 2008, the average number of sixes being hit in a match was 11; In 2009 this number fell to 9, but in the 2024 season, an average of 17 sixes are being hit in every match, which is 55% more than in 2008.
If we look at the average of 16 years from 2008 to 2023, 12 sixes were hit in every match. In comparison to this, 42% more sixes have been hit this season.

ii. More than a thousand sixes have been hit for the third consecutive season
By the end of the league stage, 1208 sixes had been hit in the season. Which is the highest in an IPL season. Earlier in 2022 and 2023 also, more than a thousand sixes were hit. In the 14 years from 2008 to 2021, not even 850 sixes could be hit in any season.

Factor-6: Wicket
i. There was no change in the rate of wicket fall
There was a rapid change in the scoring rate of IPL in the 17 years from 2008 to 2024, but the condition of the bowlers is still the same as in the first season. In the first season, an average of 12 wickets were falling in two innings of a match, now even on an average, only 12 wickets are falling in a match. That means the level of bowlers remains the same even after 17 years.
