2. Tejas Shirse sets national record in hurdles race: On May 23, Tejas Shirse won the 110m hurdles race, according to the Sports Association of India (SAI). He set a new national record at the World Athletics Continental Tour Meet 2024 being held in Finland.

Tejas Shirse finished the race in 13.41 seconds, missing the Olympic qualification mark of 13.27 seconds by 0.14 seconds. He broke Siddhant Thingalaya’s national record of 13.48 seconds set in 2017. Jyothi Yaraji won the silver medal in the women’s 100m category, equalling her own national record of 12.78 seconds.

3. To Lam became the President of Vietnam: On May 22, General To Lam, a member of the Police Bureau of the Communist Party of Vietnam, was sworn in as the new President of the country. In the seventh session of the country’s 15th National Assembly (Parliament), General Lam won the majority to become President. He received 472 out of 473 votes.

4. Nepali Sherpa conquers Everest for a record 30th time: On May 22, Nepali mountaineer Kami Rita climbed the world’s highest peak Mount Everest for the 30th time in 30 years. He became the only mountaineer in the world to do so.

5. Ramesh Babu V becomes member of CERC: On May 21, the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) appointed Ramesh Babu V as a member. Union Minister for Power and New and Renewable Energy Raj Kumar Singh administered the oath of office and secrecy to him.

Indian-origin Srinivas R Kulkarni to receive Shaw Prize: On May 21, the Shaw Prize Foundation announced the Shaw Prize in Astronomy 2024 to Srinivas R Kulkarni, an Indian-origin professor of astronomy in the US. He is known for studying phenomena such as millisecond pulsars, gamma-ray bursts, supernovae.

In 1978, Srinivas obtained a post-graduation degree from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and a PhD degree from the University of California.
