Cyclone ‘Remal’ made landfall at 8.30 pm on May 26 at Canning in West Bengal and Mongla in Bangladesh with a wind speed of 135 kmph. The landfall lasted for 4 hours and heavy rains occurred during this period.

  • The central government had deployed 12 teams of NDRF in the coastal areas of Bengal. 4 teams were on standby.

  • About 1.10 lakh people were evacuated to safer places from the coastal areas of Bengal.

  • In fact, WMO established the Panel on Tropical Cyclones in 1972. When the 27th meeting of the PTC was held in Muscat, the capital of Oman in the year 2000, all the countries decided to name the storms arising in the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Ocean.
  • After this, storms started being named from the year 2004 onwards.

2. Army Chief Manoj Pandey gets one month extension:
In the midst of the Lok Sabha elections, the government has extended the tenure of the Army Chief for one month on 26 May. Army Chief General Manoj Pandey was to retire on 31 May. But now according to the new order of the government, General Pandey will retire on 30 June.

  • Lieutenant General Manoj Pandey has actively participated in ‘Operation Vijay’ and ‘Operation Parakram’ during his 37 years of service.
  • Nearly five decades before Gen Pandey’s extension, the Army chief was given an extension in service in the 1970s.
  • At that time, the then Indira Gandhi government had given extension to Army Chief General GG Bewoor.
  • Before Bevoor, Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw was given an extension in service after India’s victory in the 1971 war.

History of 27 May:
On this day in 1964, India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru died. His death was announced in Parliament around 2 pm. On May 26, Nehru returned from Dehradun in the evening. He had gone there on a four-day health leave due to poor health. The Guardian’s report of May 27, 1964 says that at 6.30 am he first had a paralytic attack and then a heart attack. After this, Indira Gandhi immediately called his doctors. Three doctors immediately reached the PM House. They tried their best but Nehru’s body had gone into a coma.
