Former Team India player and Kolkata Knight Riders mentor Gautam Gambhir met Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah on Sunday after the IPL 2024 final. The final of this season of IPL was played between Kolkata and Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday. In this, Kolkata became the champion by defeating Hyderabad by 8 wickets.
Gambhir is the mentor of Kolkata this season. Gambhir went to meet Jay Shah after the match, which increased the speculation of him becoming the head coach of India. Gambhir is at the forefront of the race to replace Rahul Dravid. Rahul Dravid is currently the head coach of Team India. His tenure will end after the T20 World Cup to be held in the USA and West Indies.
Application for the post of head coach of Team India has to be made by May 27
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has invited applications for the post of head coach of Team India. The board released an advertisement for candidates late on Monday (April 13). Candidates can apply till 6 pm on May 27.
Gambhir does not have coaching experience
42-year-old Gambhir has no experience of coaching at international or domestic level, he has been in charge of coaching staff in two IPL franchises. He was the mentor of Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2022 and 2023. At the same time. He joined KKR in the 2024 season. Gambhir led the team to the playoffs in the first two seasons while at LSG. At the same time, KKR has won the title this season.
As a player, Gambhir was part of India’s T20 World Cup win in 2007 and ODI World Cup win in 2011. He captained KKR for seven IPL seasons from 2011 to 2017, and also qualified for the playoffs five times. As a captain, he won two titles in 2012 and 2014.
Dravid became the head coach in November 2021
Rahul Dravid was made the head coach of India in November 2021, when Team India was eliminated from the group stage of the T20 World Cup. The team again played the semi-finals in the 2022 T20 World Cup. Dravid’s tenure ended after the ODI World Cup in 2023, but due to Team India reaching the final, his tenure was extended till the T20 World Cup.
Team India’s only success under Dravid’s coaching came in the form of the Asia Cup in 2023. India won the title by defeating hosts Sri Lanka.
