It may host the World Championship match between Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh and World Champion Ding Liren of China. The All India Chess Federation (AICF) has bid to host the match to be held in November-December. This bid has been sanctioned by the Tamil Nadu government.
FIDE CEO Emil Sitovsky told PTI – We have received a bid from India. Apart from India, no other country has bid so far. The last date for bidding is 31 May. If FIDE does not receive a bid from any country in the next 2 days, then India’s bid will be confirmed.
Sitovsky said, ‘No other country has bid yet, but the deadline is till the end of this week. After that, there will be a meeting of the FIDE Council next week. After this, following the prescribed procedure, we will decide about the hosting rights. If AICF wins the bid, it will have to spend around Rs 71 crore.’
Gukesh had won the Candidates Chess Tournament last month
17-year-old Gukesh won the Candidates Chess Tournament in Toronto last month. He became the youngest player to do so. Before Gukesh, Russian player Garry Kasparov had won this tournament in 1984 at the youngest age of 22 years.

Gukesh Second Indian to win the Candidates Tournament
Gukesh is the second Indian to win this tournament. Before him, five-time world champion Vishwanathan Anand won the Candidates Tournament for the first time in 1995. He was 26 years old then.
After the victory, Gukesh said, “I am very happy. I had prepared a lot with my partner Grigory Gajevsky. This helped me.”

Members of the team that won silver in the Asian Games
Gukesh won a silver medal in the Hangzhou Asian Games in China last year. In 2015, Gukesh became a Candidate Master by winning the Under-9 title in the Asian School Chess Championship. Gukesh has won 5 Gold Asian Youth Championships so far. In 2019, he became India’s youngest and the world’s second youngest Grandmaster.
Who is D Gukesh?
Gukesh D’s full name is Domaraju Gukesh and he hails from Chennai. Gukesh was born on 7 May 2006 in Chennai. He started playing chess at the age of 7. He was initially coached by Bhaskar Nagaiah.
Nagaiah has been an international level chess player and is a chess home tutor in Chennai. After this, Vishwanathan Anand gave coaching to Gukesh along with giving him knowledge of the game. Gukesh’s father is a doctor and his mother is a microbiologist by profession.
