Kani Kusruti looked beautiful in an ivory bodycon dress, but the highlight of her outfit was the unique watermelon clutch that she flaunted on the red carpet.

Actress Kani Kusruti, who played the lead role of a nurse in the Grand Prix-winning film All We Imagine as Light, recently grabbed the audience’s attention with her appearance at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. The Malayalam actress looked beautiful in an ivory-bodycon dress, but the highlight of her outfit was the unique watermelon clutch she flashed on the red carpet, showing solidarity with Palestine ahead of the screening of her film at the prestigious film festival.

The red, green and black beaded clutch was crafted by Kusruti’s friend and Kochi-based designer, Diya John, at Salt Studio. On Instagram, the studio shared a video that depicted the making of the watermelon-shaped clutch. The clip begins with the craftsmen sketching two semi-circle watermelons on a green cloth and then they sew red, green, yellow and black coloured beads over it. Lastly, they attached the beads and embroidered cloth to a green semi-circular bag.

“The making of the Watermelon Clutch for @kantari_kanmaniat at the Cannes Film Festival 2024, showcasing her heartfelt solidarity with Palestine. Grateful to have been a part of this remarkable moment in history,” the video caption reads.

Globally, the sliced watermelon is being used as a symbol of solidarity with Palestine- as the red, green and black colours resemble the hues of the Palestinian flag.

Talking about the clutch, Kusruti said, “I wanted something in the shape of Gaza. I collaborated with my friend, who is a designer, to figure out whether it would be an embroidery or a brooch in the same colours, and then we hit upon the idea of the clutch.”

Diya John, on the other hand, shared that Kusruti wanted to project a strong political statement when she prepared her outfit and accessories for Cannes.

“A minimalist, Kani wanted all her looks to be simple. Yet, she wanted to represent her home State of Kerala and show her solidarity towards Palestine, “John said, The Voice of Fashion Quoted. “It took 20 hours to complete the breadwork on the bag.”

Apart from Kusruti, at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, several international celebs, including Bella Hadid, Cate Blanchett, Pascale Kann, Leila Bekhti and Laura Blajman-Kadar, came out in support of Palestine by wearing statement pieces of attire on the red carpet.

Talking about her glam look, Kusruti opted for a shimmery eyeshadow, winged eyeliner, mascara-laden lashes, blushed cheeks, defined brows and a glossy pink lip shade.
